Do dizziness and vertigo impact your day-to-day life? We’ve all stood up only to feel a sense of losing balance, feeling like we are swaying side to side, not being able to stand upright. Dizziness is very common and can have many causes. Your diet and nutrition, iron balance, and many other factors can also contribute to dizziness.
Vertigo is very different from dizziness. Dizziness is when you are “light-headed,”. This creates an illusion of being unstable. Vertigo is a response to a physiological factor that is causing an imbalance within your body. If you are experiencing vertigo, you may feel like you are “spinning” even when you are laying down.
Physiotherapy Can Help!
These effects of vertigo and dizziness can impact your life, whether it is impeding your ability to work, play sports, or even do simple house tasks. No matter the cause of this dizziness, physiotherapy can help you. At ProActive physiotherapy, we have physiotherapists dedicated to diagnosing and treating you!
Vestibular rehabilitation is a treatment plan which includes treatments such as the Epley maneuver and caw Thorne head exercises. These are head exercises and more that focus on decreasing nerve sensitivity to reduce the effects of vertigo. To read more in-depth on this treatment visit our Vestibular rehabilitation page.
Am I Experiencing Vertigo?
Don’t confuse vertigo and dizziness. Vertigo is a symptom and not a condition. It is often caused by an imbalance in the “vestibular system” in the inner ear.
This vestibular system helps you to stay upright and maintain your balance. It does this by sending messages to your brain regarding your movement. When the vestibular system is impaired, these messages don’t get sent to your brain or it doesn’t receive all of the information, which results in your imbalances. Some common causes of vertigo are:
Migraines
Migraines affect your vestibular system, thus causing episodes of vertigo which may cause added sensitivity to light and sound, which I’m sure we are all familiar with.
Stroke
A stroke will affect movement throughout the body, if you recently suffered a stroke then you may experience waves of vertigo, these may linger for extended periods prior.
Other Factors
There are too many factors of vertigo to list but here are some other reasons you may be having vertigo. Vestibular neuritis, Meniere’s disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and more. Don’t wait to get your dizziness checked out, you may find underlying conditions that will only get worse with time.
If It’s Not vertigo, Then What Is It?
Dizziness and other similar symptoms can also be caused by lack of sleep, poor diet, overexertion, or a cold or flu. It is common for women to suffer from iron deficiency. This can cause you to feel dizzy when you stand up. Luckily iron deficiency can be something that you can incorporate into your diet, or it can be solved with iron supplements. Dizziness happens to everyone and can even be something as simple as standing up too quickly after a long nap, causing an imbalance within your body too quickly.
